Which Job Should I Take?

by

In today’s tight labor market people seeking a new job may receive multiple job offers. Often we are working with people that have a job opportunity with our client company and then they receive a competing offer from another company. We are asked for guidance on how to best evaluate two different job opportunities.

When evaluating job opportunities there are many things to consider. You should consider growth opportunity, compensation, location, benefits, corporate structure, culture, duties and responsibilities. There are so many things to consider when comparing one job offer to another. Don’t base your decision so heavily on the salary. I have spoken with many people that are seeking a job change and their motivation is not about the money.

The best way to evaluate two job offers is to consider the following 3 things, and rank them from 1-5.

  • How do you feel about the people that you will work with on a daily basis?
    • If you are not excited about the people you are going to be working with, then nothing else matters. So consider the people and give that a ranking of 1-5. 5 being the best
  • Evaluate the duties and responsibilities of the position.
    • Evaluate the types of things you are going to be doing daily, weekly, monthly and the goals established for the position. Rank those as to your interest, excitement and your enthusiasm. Rank 1-5
  • Which company will provide the best opportunity to grow your career?
    • Where do you see your growth in terms of taking on more responsibility as you consider future promotions? Will the company help you to develop more skills to improve your value in the marketplace? How likely would outstanding performance be recognized with opportunities to grow within the company? Rank 1-5.

I would look at compensation as a 4th or 5th evaluator. Select the position that is higher ranked and don’t second guess yourself.

Focus on the future.

Good Luck!
